Eight Cores In A Mini PC: What The GMKtec M5 Ultra Offers
The Ryzen 7 7730U is a laptop-class chip with eight cores and sixteen threads, boosting to 4.5 GHz. GMKtec describes two modes set in the BIOS: a quiet power-saving mode at the 2.0 GHz base clock and a performance mode up to 4.5 GHz. That is a useful choice to have on a computer that may sit on a desk a foot from your ears.
Eight cores and sixteen threads is more than the Dell Pro desktop tower’s four-core Core i3-14100 and more than the Lenovo all-in-one’s eight single-thread cores. For office work, browsing, photo editing, light video editing and running several applications at once, it is the strongest processor of the three non-gaming desktops in our Computing section.
The listing claims a 35% performance increase over the Ryzen 5 7430U and several older Ryzen chips, and describes the architecture as Zen 3+. Treat both as manufacturer marketing: AMD’s own naming places the 7730U on Zen 3, and no test conditions are given for the 35% figure.
Upgrades, Ethernet And Three Screens On The GMKtec M5 Ultra
The upgrade path is the best of any computer we cover. Memory is a single 16GB DDR4 SO-DIMM with support for up to 64GB, and storage is a 256GB M.2 SSD with a second slot and support for up to 4TB in total. Neither upgrade is included, but both are standard parts that take minutes to fit in a mini PC.
Dual 2.5G Ethernet ports are unusual on a desktop at any price. GMKtec points at network uses such as pfSense or Untangle firewalls and small servers, and for a home user the practical benefit is a fast wired connection with a spare port. Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 cover wireless use.
Up to three displays can be connected at once through HDMI 2.0 at 4K 60Hz, DisplayPort and USB-C. For a home office with two or three monitors, that is more display capability than either the Lenovo all-in-one or the Dell Pro tower offers.
Size, Power And The VESA Mount
GMKtec includes a VESA mount, so the computer can be screwed to the back of a monitor and disappear from the desk entirely. Rated power consumption is 35W, a fraction of a tower desktop, which makes it quiet and cheap to leave running.
Radeon integrated graphics with eight compute units handle 4K video playback and light gaming, and GMKtec markets the box as a gaming mini PC. It is not a substitute for the RTX 5060 Ti in our gaming desktop, but older and lighter games are within reach at modest settings.
Limitations
256GB of storage is small for a Windows 11 Pro desktop. Budget for a second M.2 SSD soon after purchase; the listing confirms the slot but the drive is not included.
The specification table has oddities. It lists a screen size of 75 inches for a computer with no screen, and gives the memory storage capacity as 64GB, which is the memory maximum rather than the storage. It lists 802.11ac wireless compatibility while the description promises Wi-Fi 6E. The manufacturer is listed as a Shenzhen company name rather than GMKtec.
The three-year warranty applies to sales from October 2026 according to the description, and splits into one year of replacement and two years of parts. Read it as parts-only cover after the first year. 1,007 ratings at 4.3 is a solid evidence base, but mini PCs from smaller brands vary more between units than the major brands do.
Setting Up This GMKtec M5 Ultra
Setup starts with deciding where the box will live: on the desk, or on the back of the monitor using the included VESA mount. Connect power, a monitor through HDMI or DisplayPort, Ethernet and a keyboard and mouse, which are not included, then complete Windows 11 Pro’s first-start setup.
Run Windows Update, then check GMKtec’s support page for BIOS and driver updates. If you want the full 4.5 GHz boost, the listing says performance mode is set in the BIOS. Add a second SSD early rather than filling the 256GB drive.
Who Should Buy This GMKtec M5 Ultra?
Buy it if you want a small, quiet, efficient desktop with eight fast cores, Windows 11 Pro, dual 2.5G Ethernet and room to grow to 64GB of memory and 4TB of storage, for a home office, a living-room PC or a small server. At $419.99 it is the best value desktop in our Computing section.
Skip it if you want a computer that works out of the box with a keyboard, mouse and screen, where the Lenovo all-in-one is simpler. Skip it for modern gaming, where the RTX 5060 Ti gaming PC is the right choice, and skip it if you prefer a major brand’s support network.
Tinkerers and home-lab users will find the most value here: two Ethernet ports, two M.2 slots and a 64GB memory ceiling in a 35W box is an unusual combination at this price.
The Verdict
Scored 8.4 and our best value pick for desktops. GMKtec’s box offers an eight-core, sixteen-thread Ryzen 7 7730U, 16GB of upgradeable memory, two M.2 slots, dual 2.5G Ethernet, three-display output, a VESA mount and Windows 11 Pro for $419.99, with 4.3 stars from 1,007 owners.
It loses points for a 256GB SSD that will need upgrading, no keyboard or mouse, marketing claims without test conditions, a specification table with placeholder errors and a warranty that becomes parts-only after a year. For most home-office buyers it is still the smartest desktop here.
